Viability Testing

Samples other than whole blood, buccal swabs and FTA Blood Cards are considered “unusual samples” and must be processed through a viability test to determine if there is sufficient DNA to process.

Examples of unusual samples are hair and nail clipping.
Hair – to be possible for testing the hair must contain root since that is where the DNA is found.

Nails – At least 5-10 nail clippings are required for the viability test.

Turn around time is 5 days after the samples are received at the testing lab.
